WhenIwasyounger,IwasobsessedwiththeChinesedebateshowQiPaShuo.OnelinefromdebaterQingyunZhanhasstayedwithmeeversince:growthmeans“continuallylettinggoofwhoyouwere,andallowingyourenvironmenttoreshapeyou.”Lookingbackattheversionofmyselfwhoarrivedatthisnewschoolinanunfamiliarcityfouryearsago,IrealizethateverypersonImetandeveryexperienceIhadhasbecomeapartofwhoIamtoday.Andbecauseofthat,Ifindmyselflookingforwardtoeveryencounterthatstillliesahead.CommunitiesThatShapedMeatSCIEWhenIfirstarrivedatSCIE,IstillcarriedovertheexpectationsIhadsetformyselfinmiddleschool.Iwokeupat6:30everymorningtostudy,stayedcommittedtolong-distancerunningafterschool,andwasusuallybackintheclassroombyfiveorsixintheeveningforself-study.Althoughacademicsoccupiedmostofmyattention,Ialwaysplacedmyselfindifferentcommunitiesandletthemshapeme.AttheECAFairinG1,Isignedupforeightdifferentclubs.Frompublicspeakinganddebatetomathematicsandphysicscompetitions,fromdramatophilosophyandSpanish,mostofmyextracurriculartimewasspentexploringactivitiesIhadneverencounteredbefore.Thoseexperiencesunexpectedlysparkedmyinterestsinphilosophyandperformance,introducedmetocountlessnewfriends,andgraduallygavemeasenseofbelongingatthisschool.Thatyear,IhadtheopportunitytohostTEDxSCIE,challengemyselfwithimprovisedstreetperformancesalongsidemembersoftheDramaECA,andlearnthebasicsofSpanishandphilosophicaltheory.YetthedeepestsenseofbelongingseemedtoemergewhenIreturnedtothethingsthatfeltmostnaturaltome.AstheleaderoftheTableTennisECAinG2,Iworkedwithfellowmemberstodraftproposalsadvocatingforimprovementstoourfacilitiesandequipment.AsChairofTVTECA,IcoordinatedwithTencentCharityandhelpedconnecthundredsofstudentsandvolunteers.IevenfoundedaTaekwondoClubofmyown—though,admittedly,withonlyahandfulofmembers.Together,thesecommunitiesbecameanessentialpartofmydailylife,supportingbothmyinterestsandmycuriosity.TEDxSCIE2023SowhenIlearnedabouttheECADivisionoftheStudentLeadershipBodyinG2,Iimmediatelyappliedandjoinedasaprefect.IstillremembercountlessdiscussionswithseniorstudentsaboutECAmanagementpolicies,planningschooleventsfromtheproposalstageonward,andnervouslypresentingourideastoschoolleadersandfacultymembers.Backthen,IoftenfeltasthoughIwassimplycompletingonetaskafteranother.Whatremainsmostmemorable,however,waslaunchingtheveryfirsteditionoftheECAMagazineandAwardsalongsideMr.Jamie.Wecamedangerouslyclosetopullinganall-nightertofinishthelayoutbeforetheendoftheacademicyear.WhatIneverexpectedwasthatthisprojectwouldcontinueforthreeyearsandeventuallybecomeanofficialschooltradition.Eachyear,werefineditssections,experimentedwithnewthemes,andfoundwaystoimproveitfurther.Overtime,thenervousnessIoncefelttransformedintoaspecialsenseoffamiliarity.DuringmytimeasDeputyChairinA1andA2,Ialsowitnessedthe“historic”mergeroftheECAandEventsDivisionsintotheEPDivision.BeyonddesigningandpromotingmerchandiseforperformancessuchasSGTandNYC,IsomehowpickedupasurprisingamountabouttheatreproductionsimplybylearningfromtheEPcommunity.ECA&EPDivisionThebasketballteamgavemeanothersourceofbelonging.AlthoughInevertheplayeroutteamreliedontocarryusthroughgames,Isomehowbecamethevice-captainbyA2andmanagedtocontributeafewreliablepointsineverygame.ImisstheMondaypracticesthatalwaysseemedtobeginwithendlesswarm-ups,thelongbusridestocompetitionsacrossdifferentschools,thenoisycelebrationdinnersaftergames,andtheuniquecamaraderiethatexistedamongteammates.Unfortunately,wefelljustshortofwinningamedalduringmyfinalseason—butIdidmanagetocollectanimpressivenumberofbizarreteamphotos.LessonsBeyondtheClassroomAnotherforcequietlyshapingmethroughoutthesefouryearswasacademicpressure.AlthoughIenteredhighschoolconvincedthatIwasaSTEMstudentintendingtostudymathematics,IstillspentfouryearstakingHistoryandthenotoriouslydemandingA-LevelEnglishLiterature.InA1,Isimultaneouslytookone-yearLiteratureandacceleratedASFurtherMathematics,leavingmewithoutasinglefreeperiodandaddingfourextraexaminationsduringthemostimportantASexamseason.WithhumanitiessubjectsconstantlythreateningmyGPA,IfillednotebookafternotebookorganizingconceptsfromEconomics,History,andLiterature.Beforeexams,Idesperatelytriedtoforcehundredsofquotationsintomymemory.Duringessayexams,Ioftenwroteuntilmyhandbecamenumb,yetstillfoundmyselfinstinctivelyaskingforadditionalanswerbooklets.Atthesametime,IwasbalancingSTEMsubjectsandchasingeverypossiblemarkinpublicexaminations.IwouldalsoliketoformallyaccusethemathematicalprodigiesintheFurtherMathematicsXGclass,whoseclassaveragesof99.97somehowconvincedtherestofusthatanythinglessthanaperfectscoremeantbeingtheonlypersonresponsibleforloweringtheaverage.DespitespendingeveryyearthreateningtodropHistoryandLiterature,despitethelatenights,thestress,andtherecurringmomentsofdespair,theseexperienceshavebecomesomeofmyfondestmemories.Moreimportantly,theyhelpedshapemeintosomeonemorewell-roundedandmoreresilientunderpressure.AS&ALFurtherClassThencameapplicationseason,whichsomehowraisedthestakesevenfurther.MyA2yearbeganunderthedualpressuresofapplyingtoboththeUnitedStatesandtheUnitedKingdom.OnonesideweretheSAT,TOEFL,andearlyapplicationessays;ontheotherwereCambridgeadmissionstestsandtheUCASpersonalstatement.IstillvividlyrememberthetwoweekswhenU.S.EDdecisions,myCambridgeinterview,Imperialinterviews,Americanuniversityinterviews,andmultipleRDessaydeadlinesallcollidedwithfinalexaminations.Everydayfeltlikeanegotiationwithtimeitself.ThereweremomentswhenIrepeatedlybrokedownmentally.TherewereweekswhenIhadtoprepareforCambridgeinterviewsunderimpossiblytightdeadlines.Yetwhenthepressurebecameoverwhelmingandretreatnolongerfeltlikeanoption,IdiscoveredthatIwascapableofpushingbeyondlimitsIhadnevertestedbefore.IalsomissthoseweeksaftermyCambridgeinterview,whenmyfriendsandIwouldwakeup,openavideocall,andspendentiredayswritingcollegeessaystogether.ImissstaringhelplesslyatAmericanessayprompts,convincedIhadexhaustedeverymeaningfulstoryIcouldpossiblytell.(Infact,writingthisgraduationreflectionhasbroughtbackthatexactfeeling.)Mostofall,Iamgratefulforeveryfriendwhostoodbesidemethroughexamseasonandapplicationseason.Thefriendshipsforgedduringthosemonthsbecameuniquelyprecious.TheRoadBetweenSCIEandHomeAlthoughIlivedindifferentcitiesthroughoutthesefouryears,onethingneverchanged:thetwo-tothree-hourjourneyhomeeachweekbycarorhigh-speedrail.WhenIfirstarrivedinthiscityfouryearsago,Ioftenspentthosejourneysreminiscingaboutmiddleschool.Ilistenedtoplaylistsrecommendedbymybrotherorchattedendlesslywithmyparentsaboutstoriesfrommynewschool.SometimesItraveledwitholderSCIEalumnifromShunde;othertimesIunexpectedlyranintofriendsatGuangzhouSouthRailwayStationandlaughedourwaythroughthejourney.Now,IhavefriendsinDongguanwithwhomIregularlystudyandspendtime.Eachcityleftbehinditsowncollectionofmemories,quietlyshapingmealongtheway.Intruth,ittookmefouryearstogenuinelyfeelthatShenzhenwashome.OnlyafterapplicationseasonendeddidIbeginexploringpartsofthecityIhadnevervisitedbefore.OnthedayCambridgedecisionswerereleased,myroommateandIwaitedanxiouslyinHappyValleyfortheemailfrommycollege.AndonceIrealizedthatgraduationmeantleavingShenzhenbehind,IbecamestrangelyobsessedwithdraggingmyclosestfriendsontoendlessbikeridesalongShenzhenBay,cyclingallthewaytotheendofthewaterfronttrail.Ilovetheocean.PerhapstheyoungerversionofmyselfneverimaginedthatmyhighschoolyearswouldunfoldinacoastalcitylikeShenzhen.NordidIimaginethat,afteryearsofassumingIwouldattendcollegeintheUnitedStates,myuniversityjourneywouldultimatelytakeplaceintheUnitedKingdom.Andsoanotherchapterbegins—anotheropportunitytoleavebehindthefamiliar,tobereshapedbyanewenvironment,andtocontinuegrowing.Ilookforwardtotheopportunitiesandchallengesthatawaitmeatthenextstopinlife,tothewaysanewenvironmentwillshapeme,andtodiscoveringthekindofpersonIwillchoosetobecome.HostingtheSeniorPerformanceAnyway,Iamdeeplygratefulforeveryencounter,everyfriendship,andeverylastingmarkthesefouryearshaveleftonme.Ourfouryearsofhighschoolhavefinallycometoanend,andsomehowIstillhavenotfiguredouthowtoconcludethisgraduationreflection.SoperhapsI’llenditsimply:Happygraduation.Tobecontinued.如果您想要提前了解关于国际学校的全面信息,家长们可以扫码关注“帮你择校”公众号了解国际学校新资讯!*综合内容来源学校,如有不妥,请告知。
